Abstract:

This Florida Water Management District boundaries dataset is based on a shapefile developed by Florida Department of Environmental Protection. For cartographic purposes, the state boundary lines have been generalized. However, the boundaries between water management districts kept the detailed information of the source data. Islands along water management district boundaries were arbitrarily assigned a water management district name.

Purpose:

This dataset can only be used for general cartographic purposes.

The line data was interperted from Florida State Statute and digitized on the fly from 1:24,000 USGS Mylars. The original projection was UTM. The Data was later projected to DER Lambert and even later to Florida Albers. The coverage was then exported, ftped to a DEC/ALPHA running UNIX, and inserted into the quad library.

The wmd line coverage was combined with the 1:2m USGS polygon boundary coverage. Dangles and labelerrors and attribution were corrected. A field called 'NAME' was added as an attribute.

The WMDs shapefile was downloaded from FDEP website, and re-projected to UTM zone 17N, HPGN to match SJRWMD data projection

The old WMDs boundaries layer in SDE, which contained erroneous WMD boundaries, was intersected with the FDEP WMDs shapefile. The output shapefile contains the generalized state boundary of the old WMDs and the updated boundary lines between WMDs. The updated WMDs shapefile was loaded into SDE.

18 June 2003: Effective July 1, 2003, the Polk County portion of SJRWMD was transferred to SWFWMD. The SWFWMD and SJRWMD boundaries were revised according to the SJRWMD legal description included in the legislation designating the transfer. This legal description was based on section (PLSS) boundaries; the PLSS layer was used as a guide for editing the layer.
