RSH was identified by combining the SJRWMD land use/land cover data base, produced from aerial photography dated between 1993 and 1995, with results from the Florida Game and Fresh Water Fish Commission's (now FWC) statewide habitat assessment (Closing the Gaps in Florida's Wildlife Habitat Conservation System, 1994). The two types of habitat areas designated in the GFC report were used: Strategic Habitat Conservation Areas(SHCA): habitat that is essential for the long term viability of selected species and natural communities and is not protected by the current system of conservation lands. Biodiversity Hot Spots(DISTHOT123): public or private lands where habitat conditions for five or six rare species (Class 2) or seven or more rare species (Class 3) are likely to occur. The GFC data were modified to produce RSH by: including areas composed of 100 percent natural land cover (wetlands or upland forests) and surrounded by GFC habitat, extending habitat boundaries to the edge of the natural land cover type, and deleting habitat occurring in urban areas and on Class 2 agriculutral, silvicultural, or range lands.
