Summary
The potentiometric surface is important in monitoring effects
of groundwater withdrawals, determining recharge areas, monitoring the possible
travel of contaminates, placement of consumptive use wells, and is an important
variable in a variety of hydrogeologic models and modeling goals.
Description
NOTE JANUARY 2014: UFA potentiometric
surfaces for the following periods, were generated by SJRWMD staff for
the SJRWMD, using Geovariance's Isatis
geostatistical package: September 2009 & 2010, May & September 2011
& 2012. USGS decadinal May-June 2010 UFA potentiometric surface is also published (by USGS). See Technical Fact Sheet:

An imaginary surface representing the static head of
ground water and defined by the level to which water
will rise in a well. The slope of the potentiometric surface defines the
hydraulic gradient and the horizontal direction of groundwater flow.
Potentiometric surface contours are generalized on a regional scale to portray
water levels in a dynamic hydrologic system taking due account of the
variations in hydrogeologic conditions such as well-depth differences,
non-simultaneous measurements of water levels, variable effects of pumping, and
changing climatic influence. The potentiometric contours, thus, may not conform
exactly with individual measurements of water level.
