Description:
Abstract:
This layer is a general statewide physiographic divisions map of Florida. It was developed based on the Physiographic Divisions map of Florida , developed by Dr. H.K. Brooks of the University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences, Center for Environmental and Natural Resources in 1981. Brooks states that the map should be used in conjunction with the "Geologic Map of Florida".
Purpose:
This layer provides a general map of the delineation of physiographic divisions in Florida. The source map was almost certainly not designed for use as a GIS data layer, but rather as a general statewide reference map.
Supplemental_Information:
The source map is accompanied by a document titled "Guide to the Physiographic Divisions of Florida";. Copies of the source map and document can be found in the SJRWMD library. The Guide can also be viewed digitally at: /sjr/intra/gisdoc/data/metadata/physdivs.pdf.

This data layer was desinged for use as statewidr reference map. These Cnsiderations should be kept in mind when determining if this is an appropriate layer to include in an analysis, and at what scale it will be used. Spatial accuracy of this data layer is greatly affected by several considerations: 1. The source map was almost certainly not designed for use as a GIS data layer, but rather as a general statewide reference map: - The Subdistrict boundaries are often not closed on the source map; the person digitizing had to decide where to place the closing line. - In reality, the features are not divided by sharp boundaries, but rather by transition zones of varying width. In fact, the division boundaries on the source document are very thick - Subdistrict boundaries on the map (2/32 inch wide) correspond to a line a half mile wide on the ground. 2. The data was digitized in two separate stages by two different people. 3. The source map used in digitizing has not been carefully preserved.

These considerations should be kept in mind when determining if this is an appropriate layer to include in an analysis, and at what scale it will be used.

Brooks developed the original Physiographic Divisions map in 1981 on a 1:500:000 scale basemap provided by the U.S. Geological Survey.
Process_Step:
Process_Description:
Sometime before October 1995 the area within the St. Johns River Water Management District was digitized by SJRWMD Division of GIS staff. Attribution consisted of a series of three-letter codes representing abbreviations of the names of the various divisions.
Process_Step:
Process_Description:
In December 1997, the rest of the features on the map were added to the data layer by Division of Groundwater Programs staff. The old three-letter code attribution was dropped in favor of listing full division names in the PAT, and region topology and arc attribution were added to the data layer.
Process_Step:
Process_Description:
In January 1999, polygon attribution was further revised by Division of GIS staff. Items were organized into the current hierarchy of Section, District, Subdistrict, and Subdivision; region topology built for Sections, Districts, and Subdistricts; and the unique division ID created

Overview_Description:
Entity_and_Attribute_Overview:
TERMINOLOGY AS USED IN THE DATA LAYER: In Florida, there are three Sections: Atlantic Coastal Plain, Florida, and Gulf Coastal Plain. Each Section has one or more Districts (numbered 1 - X). Each District has many Subdistricts (numbered 1a - 1y, or Xa - Xy), the term Subdistrict is not specifically used by Brooks. Some Subdistricts have further Subdivisions (1a1 - 1az). Again, the term Subdivision is not specifically used by Brooks. Divisions appears to be the generic name Brooks uses for all the different levels of of physiography. Subdivisions is the term he uses for the smallest delineated areas, although this is not explicitly defined.
