Description:

Abstract:

The digital raster graphics (DRG) are scanned images of the U.S. Geological Survey 30 x 60 minute topographic map that have been geo-referenced.

Purpose:

DRG may be used to collect, review, and revise other digital data, especially, DLGs.

Supplemental_Information:

Two versions of the 1:100,000 DRG are availble. Set one includes all features contained in the original DRG as provided by the USGS and are found in the drg100 sub-directory.. The second set has had the contour lines removed and is found under the drg100sj sub-directory.

The image inside the map neatline is georeferenced to the surface of the earth. When the DRG is combined with other digital products, such as digital orthophoto quarter quadrangles (DOQQs) or digital evelvation models (DEMs), the resulting image provides additional visual information for the extraction and revision of base cartographic information.

Process_Description:

The USGS process to produce the DRG begins with the scanning of a paper 7.5-minute topographic map. A standard quadrangle is scanned at a resolution of 500 dots per inch results in a red-green-blue (RGB) file of up to 300 megabytes. The RGB file is converted to tagged image file format (TIFF), viewed, and the position of each of the sixteen 2.5-minute grid ticks on the image is collected. Processing software uses these coordinates to rectify and georeference the image to the UTM ground coordinates. A piecewise linear transformation completes the georeferencing. The SJRWMD staff stripped the collars from the images, mosaiced them together, and converted them to one Arc/Info Grid format data layer.
