Abstract:
Professional Engineering Consultants, Inc. was contracted by the St. John's River Water Management District (SJRWMD), under Contract #SK422FO, Work Order #1 on July 26, 2007, to perform surveying and mapping services for the "near portion" of the updated topographic survey of Lake Apopka.
The projcct scope of work for this assignment was to perform the profiles required for the "near shore" portion of the Lake Apopka topographic survey update. The project entailed surveying a total of23 defined profile sites along the shoreline of the lake. Sites E, F, H, K, L, N, P, S, T, V, X, Y, Z, BB, GG, JJ, LL, NN, OO, QQ, and SS were surveyed from elevation 63.0 feet to elevation 66.0 feet. Two additional sites, C and W, were surveyed from 63.0 feet to 68.0 feet. The digital deliverables required for this assignment include all surveyed data in ArcView shape and ASCII text files, as well as aerial exhibits in pdf format which depict each of the surveyed profile lines and the surrounding area.
Elevation of the points was originally collected in NGVD 1929 vertical datum. NAVD 1988 elevations were computed from the NGVD 1929 values using VERTCON/CORPSCON software. Elevation values for both vertical datums are included in the attribute table. Note: The metadata for this layer was constructed from information contained in the "Surveyor's Report for Lake Apopka/Near Shore Topographic Survey, Lake County & Orange County, Florida".
Purpose: Near shore elevation measurements for Lake Apopka.

Background I Introduction
The Surface Water Improvement and Management (SWIM) Act of 1987 identified Lake Apopka, the fourth largest lake In Florida. as a priority water body. The goals of the St. Johns River Water Management District (SJRWMD) include restoring the water quality and wildlife habitat of lake Apopka. In order to facilitate the engineering, monitoring, and evaluation of restoration projects, an updated survey product for Lake Apopka is essential. This survey will generate elevation data and deliverables such as contour maps, bathymetric contour maps and hypsographic curves essential to performing routine calculations and modeling related to storm water storage capacity, water and nutrient budgets, runoff calculations and sediment re-suspension studies.
Current water levels and minimum draft requirements of the bathymetric survey vessel require this survey to be subdivided into 2 units. The "open water" survey portion, to be issued under a separate work order, is estimated to reach shoreward to approximately the 63-foot contour. The second survey unit, the "near shore" portion, will begin at the 63-foot contour and continue onshore to the 66-foot contour as described in the SJRWMD Topographic one-foot contours.
Objectives
The purpose of this specific work order is to perform the near shore portion of the elevation survey for Lake Apopka, located in Lake and Orange Counties. District staff will use the results of this survey to better quantify lake volume, provide relationships between lake stage, volume and surface area, and in future sediment resuspension studies.
Scope and Task Identification
The attached map (Exhibit "B") generally depicts the overall site as well as individual profile line locations. A total of 23 profile sites will be surveyed. There are 21 profile sites to be surveyed from elevation 63.0 ft. to elevation 66.0 ft: Sites E, F, H, K. L. N, P. S, T. V, X, Y, Z, BB, GG. JJ, LL, NN, OO, QQ and SS. An additional 2 sites, C and W, shall be surveyed from elevation 63.0 feet up to elevation 68.0 feet. Surveyor is allowed to adjust the horizontal location of these profile sites up to 330 feet In either direction to avoid heavy vegetation, or to better capture a representative data set.
Shots will be taken typically at 50-foot intervals. The intent of the lake bottom measurement is to capture the elevation of the upper surface of the soft sediment/unconsolidated flocculent material. This is to be accomplished by using a sounding rod with an 8-inch diameter plate attached to the bottom. The rod will be held suspended above the lake bottom surface, and gently released to drop down and come to rest with no pressure applied by the technician.
Top of water elevation, with date and time noted, is required at each profile site.
Horizontal accuracy for the project data is required to be 2 meters or better. Horizontal datum for the project is UTM NAD83 (90), Zone 17N, units = meters.
Vertical accuracy of the project data is to be +/- 0.2 [feet] or better. Vertical datum for the project is National Geodetic Vertical Datum (NGVD) of 1929, units = feet.
