Abstract:
Contains the 2011 Indian River Lagoon Seagrass GeoDatabase which is a map showing the location of seagrass within the project boundary. The map includes the area between Ponce Inlet south to Jupiter Inlet. Seagrass was photo interpreted from digital aerial photography captured on August 18-23, 2011 and October 1 & 2, 2011. The aerial photography was acquired using a Vexcel UltracamX. Features were classified according to a modified Florida Land Use Cover and Forms Classification System (FLUCCS). The 2011 seagrass mapping for the Indian River Lagoon Project was accomplished in stereo using SOCET SET softcopy photogrammetric workstations. Field work was conducted throughout the duration of the project for signature identification and ground truthing.
Purpose:
A primary objective of the Indian River Lagoon (IRL) Surface Water Improvement and Management (SWIM) Plan is to protect and restore seagrasses. The IRL SWIM Plan directs the South Florida and St. Johns River Water Management Districts to map seagrasses in the Indian River Lagoon at 2 to 3 year intervals and to acquire aerial photographs for each of the other non-mapping years. Accordingly, Indian River Lagoon seagrass maps have been prepared for the following years: 1943, 1986, 1989, 1992, 1994, 1996, 1999, 2001, 2003, 2005, 2006, 2007, and 2009. These data contain the 2011 seagrass mapping project. These lagoon-wide maps, derived from aerial photographs, provide an overall picture of the seagrass resources in the IRL. These maps serve as important management tools for obtaining a current inventory of this resource, identifying "healthy" areas that may deserve special protection efforts, and identifying potential "problem" areas that require further investigation. These large scale maps can also document significant trends in the status of this resource.

Attribute accuracy was tested by the St. Johns River Water Management via visual comparison of the aerial photographs with the seagrass data to ensure consistency with the classification system and photo signatures. Groundtruthing was also performed to check the delineation and classification of photo signatures. Additional GIS data integrity checks including were completed including those for topology and valid attribution. Classification accuracy was approved by the St. Johns River Water Management District.

Checks were completed for polygon topology, overlapping polygons, unlabeled features, multi-labeled features, duplicate geometry, slivers, gaps, and unnecessary polygon boundaries.
Completeness_Report:
Minimum mapping unit for seagrass and unvegetated bottom polygons is 0.25 acres. The study area boundary for the project was defined by the SJRWMD. Features were captured and classified according to the minimum mapping unit guideline and the SJRWMD/SFWMD modified FLUCCS.

Surveyed photo-identifiable control points used on prior project years were used to check absolute spatial accuracy. Relative accuracy was checked against the 2009 seagrass maps and orthophotography. Horizontal accuracy of the data meets the USGS National Map Accuracy Standard for 1:12,000 scale maps.

Process_Description:
The St. Johns River and South Florida Water Management Districts have worked cooperatively to map Indian River Lagoon (IRL) seagrass every 2-3 years since 1986. Maps are prepared by interpreting aerial imagery; limited groundtruthing is conducted to facilitate photo interpretation. Since 1999, classification accuracy assessments have been conducted on the map products.
For the classification accuracy assessment, random points are generated in ArcMap, loaded into GPS units, and visited in the field to determine submerged bottom features at each point. These results are ultimately compared with map data to test overall map classification accuracy.
